Berberine has picked up a reputation as a weight-loss supplement. The NIH's complementary health center (NCCIH) has a page on exactly that question, and the fine print is about the people who were studied.

Short answer

Maybe, but the evidence isn't conclusive, according to NCCIH. A 2022 review of 18 studies on body weight and 23 on body mass index (BMI) found "significant decreases in both weight and BMI" in people who took berberine. Many of those studies had a high risk of bias, most participants had health problems such as diabetes or fatty liver disease, and most of the research was done in Asian countries. Three products reviewed on this site list berberine, and none says how much.

## What the 2022 review found

NCCIH's answer to "Will taking berberine help me lose weight?" opens with a hedge: "Some studies suggest that it might, but the evidence is not conclusive." The review behind it pooled 18 studies that measured body weight and 23 that measured BMI, and it did find decreases in both.

The effect wasn't spread evenly. Weight changes showed up "primarily in people who took berberine in doses of more than 1 gram per day and for more than 8 weeks." That describes the studies. It isn't a dose to aim for, and whether berberine suits you at any dose is a question for your doctor.

Then the quality problem: "Many of the studies included in this review had a high risk of bias, and the outcomes of individual studies were inconsistent." NCCIH says better research would be needed before anyone can conclude that berberine reduces weight and BMI. Our reading: interesting, unproven, and not something to build a weight goal around.

## Who the studies were about

This is the part that decides whether the headline applies to you.

Detail

What NCCIH says

What it means for you

Health of participants

Most had health problems, such as diabetes or fatty liver disease, "that might have influenced the results"

If you're otherwise healthy and want to lose weight, most of this research wasn't done on people like you

Where

Mostly Asian countries; "very few were done in North America"

The results come mostly from outside the U.S.

Amount and form

The amounts and formulations used "have varied widely"

The studies don't point to one product or one form

Dose and time

Weight effects mainly above 1 gram a day, for more than 8 weeks

A description of the research, not a target to copy

Study quality

Many studies at high risk of bias; results inconsistent

Read the headline as a lead, not a conclusion

## Which labels here list berberine, and in what form

Three products we've reviewed list berberine. In the claims we recorded from their pages, all three are pitched for blood sugar, not weight, and none prints a berberine amount.

Product

Form named

Daily serving

Berberine amount

Glyco Pulse

Berberine HCl, inside a 528 mg blend of 13 ingredients

One capsule

Not disclosed

BloodArmor

Gluco Extend

From each product's page and label, read on September 27, 2026; full details in each review. NCCIH's summary is about berberine in studies, not about any of these products.

## Safety notes from the same NCCIH page

### Side effects

"Some side effects of berberine have been reported in research studies, primarily gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea."

### An interaction example

Berberine has been shown to interact with cyclosporine, a drug used to prevent rejection of transplanted organs. If you take any medicine, talk with your health care provider before trying berberine.

### Diabetes medicine

Berberine "is currently being studied for its effects on diabetes." If you take a diabetes medicine, ask your doctor before adding it, and don't change a prescription to make room for a supplement.

### Pregnancy, breastfeeding, infants

NCCIH says berberine is "likely to be unsafe for infants" and "may also be unsafe for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding." For the doses used in clinical settings, see our berberine for blood sugar guide.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does berberine help you lose weight?**

Possibly, but NCCIH says the evidence isn't conclusive. A 2022 review found decreases in weight and BMI, in studies with a high risk of bias and mostly in people with diabetes or fatty liver disease.

**What dose of berberine is used for weight loss?**

NCCIH doesn't recommend one, and neither do we. The table above describes the amounts the reviewed studies used, which is research, not advice; ask your doctor before taking any amount, especially with diabetes medication.

**What is the best berberine for weight loss?**

NCCIH doesn't name a form or a brand, and it says the amounts and formulations used in studies "have varied widely." Of the three products here that list berberine, two name berberine HCl and none gives an amount.

**Do berberine before and after photos mean anything?**

Not much. NCCIH's summary gives no typical amount of weight lost, and a photo can't show the dose, the diet, or whether the person had diabetes or fatty liver disease, as most people in the studies did.

**Is berberine a GLP-1 drug like Ozempic?**

No. NCCIH describes berberine as "a substance found in a variety of plants" that is being studied for diabetes and heart disease risk factors, and its weight-loss page doesn't compare it with any weight-loss drug. Our GLP-1 supplements guide covers the "nature's Ozempic" nickname.

**What are the side effects of berberine for weight loss?**

Mostly stomach and gut symptoms, per NCCIH: nausea, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation or diarrhea. It may also interact with medicines, it's likely unsafe for infants, and it may be unsafe during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
